Odisha’s twin city to have four-lane ring road

It’s good news for the residents of twin cities of Cuttack and Odisha’s capital city as a four lane 64 km ring road will be constructed from Khordha to Manguli square which will serve as a bypass to the existing six lane road between the twin cities and help ease traffic pressure making commuting hassle free.

Informing this at a press briefing at the venue of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) at the Janata Maidan here today, Nalinikanta Pradhan, secretary, Works, said a detailed project report (DPR) in this regard will be prepared very soon, he added.

“Six laning works on the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar road is almost complete, within a span of 3 to 4 years it’s going to get congested and there is a demand for making it eight lanes which is not possible because removal of structures alongside it is difficult. We had sent a request to the Centre for a bypass road for Cuttack-Bhubaneswar for easing the traffic problem in these cities. We have received an in-principle approval from them on January 16. We have proposed for a 64 km stretch from Khordha to Manguli Square. We hope they will expedite on it and we have written for expediting it. The state government will provide all support which will include support for land acquisition and other supports. The project will entail a cost of around Rs 800 to 900 crore”, said Pradhan after formal inauguration of the IRC’s 75th annual session by chief minister Naveen Patnaik .

Inaugurating IRC session, the chief minister impressed on introduction of new technology in road construction sector.

He suggested the IRC to utilize industrial wastes, like fly ash, slag and plastic waste for road construction.

Highlighting on the Odisha government’s emphasis on road development in the state the Chief Minister said: “Government of Odisha spends nearly 25% of its budget which implies prioritizing of infrastructure development in road sector in the state”.

Patnaik said that the Biju Expressway project, having a distinguished funding of about Rs 3,200 crore, is the road connectivity project to major cities of Odisha with the developed urban areas of the country like the Vijayawada-Ranchi corridor, which will provide connectivity between Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Moreover, the State Highway Development Programme is having a major aim for improving all State Highway up to two-lane standard. Besides this the newly launched Mukhya Mantri Sadak Yojana (MMSY) will take care of the roads connectivity to all unconnected rural areas”, Patnaik told the Congress.
