In a significant development, expelled BJD MP and president of Odisha Jan Morcha (OJM) Pyari Mohan Mohapatra today announced that his party would contest the forthcoming elections for 25 urban local bodies (ULBs) where polls could not be held due to the strike in western Odisha demanding a permanent bench of the High Court.

Addressing a press conference at his residence here this morning, Mohapatra said OJM is likely to receive official recognition as a political party and allotted a symbol by the Election Commission of India by November 25.

The party would launch a membership drive from October 25 and hopes to recruit 20 lakh members before the 2014 elections, he said.

The OJM leader said the state will see a grand alliance of as many as 15 political parties, including OJM, taking shape in the next few weeks.

The ‘grand alliance’, Mohapatra said, will take on both BJD and the Congress in the 2014 elections.

Senior Congress leader from Athagarh Bibhuti Mishra, who joined the OJM with his supporters yesterday, was present at the press conference.
