Bhubaneswar, Apr 26:

To help solve the problems of milk farmers in the state, Orissa State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (OMFED) will set up a three lakh litre capacity plant in Odisha capital.

Agriculture, farmers empowerment, fisheries and animal resource development minister Pradeep Maharathy said in the secretariat yesterday that the plant will be set up in Arilo village under Govindpur mouza in the Odisha capital.

He added that 51 acre land has been bought for this purpose. The new plant will be able to produce 3 lakh litres of milk every day. For setting up the plant, NABARD will provide support of Rs 300 crores.

The total current milk production capacity of OMFED is 5.51 litre. While, the milk producers in the state are producing surplus and they are not able to sell their produce.

The new plant will be able to absorb the surplus produce from the local dairy farmers, he added.

It is to be noted that, on April 20 protesting against the alleged anti-farmer policy of the Naveen Patnaik-led Odisha government milk farmers in Puri poured hundreds of litres of milk on the road in front of the collector’s office.

The agitating members were demanding a minimum procurement price offer of Rs 30 per litre of milk  by OMFED and the inclusion of milk in the menu of mid-day meals served in schools.

Notably, the cooperative has stopped procuring milk from certain milk societies citing poor quality. Recently, OMFED decided to procure milk above 29 point density. Earlier, it used to procure milk within a range of 24-29 point density in lactometer test.
