One killed, over 10 injured in group clash during Danda Jatra in Odisha’s Nayagarh

Nayagarh: A group clash during Danda Jatra in Odisha’s Nayagarh district last night claimed the life of a person and left more than ten others critically injured.

The deceased was identified as Naveen Parida of Durgaprasad village.

According to reports, villagers of Durgaprasad and Deulapalli were carrying out procession of their respective deities, during which a heated exchange of words erupted between the two groups near Shiv Temple at Sindhuria village.

The matter took a violent turn as several youths of Deulapalli allegedly kidnapped Parida and hacked him to death with sharp weapon. Over 10 villagers of Durgaprasad sustained grievous injuries in the group clash and were admitted to Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

The attackers also pelted stones at police, injuring the IIC of Nayagarh Town police station and 3 other police personnel. The cops were trying to bring the situation under control when the stone pelting took place.

Police have recovered the body of Parida from roadside near a pond in Deulapalli village and started an investigation into the incident. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Police forces were deployed in the two villages to avoid any further untoward incident as palpable tension was prevailing in the locality.
