One killed, three injured in Odisha in lightning strike while playing cricket

Baripada: It was like any other day when the four friends assembled in the afternoon to play cricket. Little did they know that nature’s fury would snatch one of their friends for ever.

Tragedy struck as one child was killed and three others sustained grievous injuries in lightning strike in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district this afternoon while they were in the middle of a cricket match.

Four friends were playing cricket on a roadside playground near Karadia village at around 4 pm. Suddenly, strong wind accompanied by lightning and showers started pounding owing which the children ran to safety to take shelter under a tree.

However, lightning struck the tree and the children under it fell victim to the bolt. While 13-year-old Udit Saraf was killed on the spot, three others sustained grievous injuries. The trio was rushed to Karanjia Community Health Centre (CHC) where the doctors referred them to SCB Medical College and Hospital.

The condition of the three injured minors was stated to be critical.

The four children were Class VIII students.

The mishap brings back the ugly memories of the tragic incident in Khurda district in March 2015 where six children were killed in lightning strike during a cricket tournament at a village playground under Jaripada panchayat.
