One killed in wall collapse in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4 :

Heavy rainfall for the past three days has disrupted life in Odisha, killing one person in Boudh district, an official said Monday.

The incessant rain has affected roads and railways traffic and triggered flash floods in several districts, an official of the state flood control told IANS.

A 42-year-old man has died in Boudh when dilapidated walls of a house collapsed over him, the official said. The number of deaths due to rainfall related mishaps during this monsoon season increased to 11 with the death of this man, he said.

Rainfall above 34.5 mm is considered heavy and above 124.5 mm is considered very heavy. Some places in the districts of Angul, Bargarh, Nawarangpur, Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada and Rayagada recorded very heavy rainfall Sunday, he said.

Dhankauda block of Sambalpur district recorded 310 mm of rainfall, the highest in the state, he said.

Heavy rainfall forced over five thousands people from Sambalpur to take shelter in 25 government relief camps after rain water flooded streets and homes, he said.

Sambalpur is located 320 km from Bhubaneswar.

Although the water level in all the rivers was below danger line, the state authorities have issued alerts for western and southern districts to stay prepared for any eventuality as Met officials has forecast more rains for the next two-three days.
