‘One miscreant vandalised chulhas at Puri Jagannatha temple as understood from CCTV footage’

Puri: In order to review the situation at Shri Jagannatha Temple in Puri, Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra and DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal visited the 12th century shrine today, a day after some miscreants vandalized over 40 wood-fired earthen ovens (chulhas) inside the temple’s Rosaghara.

Mahapatra told media persons waiting outside the temple that one miscreant has vandalized the earthen ovens as understood from the footage of CCTVs installed inside the temple and the accused will be nabbed soon.

He further stated one person had vandalized the Rosaghara earthen ovens in the night of Saturday. Appropriate steps will be taken to ensure such incident does not recur, the Chief Secretary said.

He ruled out any differences between the Suara Mahasuara Nijog and the Suara Nijog.

DGP Bansal, who accompanied the Chief Secretary to the temple during the review of the situation, said investigation is going on and motive behind the sacrilegious act will be known thereafter.

Bansal informed apart from the Jagannatha Temple Police (JTP), the police force will be deployed inside the temple.

Earlier in the day, a complaint was lodged with the Singhdwara Police in connection with the vandalisation of earthen ovens.

The case was registered under Sections 427 and 295A of IPC and Section 30 (A) (B) of SJTA Act.

A five-member team has been formed by the district administration to probe incident.

In the evening on April 2, over 40 Chulhas were found vandalized after preparation of food for evening rituals.
