One more farmer commits suicide in Odisha’s Nuapada dist

Nuapada: Odisha government’s assurance to compensate farmers for crop losses due to various causes has failed to contain farmer suicides in the State as one more farmer succumbed to his alleged suicide attempt today in Kotamal village under Khariar block in Nuapada district.

According to reports, the deceased farmer identified as Jharpoda Sabar had grown paddy and cotton crops in about five acres of land by taking Rs 50,000 as a loan from a self-help group.

With prospects of repaying the loan being grim due to crop failure, Jharpoda was a worried man.

He reportedly consumed pesticide in his field today and was rushed to Khariar Mission Hospital by his family members in critical condition.

He succumbed to his suicide bid while undergoing treatment at the hospital, reports said.

Following the incident, local BJP workers staged a dharna in front of Khariar police station and had blocked Khariar-Bhawanipatna road for some time.

BJP workers demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation to the next of kin of the deceased farmer.
