One more farmer kills self in Odisha

Yet another farmer burdened by loans and damaged crops has committed suicide by drinking pesticide in Sirabahal village in Bargarh district, today.

Pabitra Bariha, had borrowed around Rs 1.5 lakhs from UCO and SBI banks and had also taken Rs 50,000 from private money lenders for agricultural purposes. He had grown paddy and vegetables in eight acres of land this year.

But poor rain lead to crop failure and Pabitra deeply disturbed by his pending loans took this drastic step about two days ago, his family members said.

He was admitted to Bargarh district headquarters hospital where he breathed his last today.

Villagers and family members are demanding compensation due to crop loss. No administrative officials have reached the village as yet, sources said.

A young farmer, Mahajura, had committed suicide at Belbahali village in the district last month.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik, had reassured farmers on Sunday after his return from five-day New Delhi tour and said the State government would reschedule crop loans for the drought affected farmers.
