Online registration of construction workers begins in Odisha

Online registration of building and other construction labourers in the state got underway with the launch of the official website of Odisha Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board here yesterday.

Inaugurating the website at the office the Khurda District Labour Officer yesterday, Prafulla Kumar Mallik, Minister for Labour & Employees, assured that all construction labourers of the state would be registered within the next three months.

The government had started the Odisha Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board to ensure the safety of construction workers and implement welfare programmes targeted at them on January 3, 2004. The Board was reconstituted first on January 14, 2008 and then again on August 2, 2011 to make it more effective, he added.

As per reports available with the department, there are more than 3 million building and other construction labourers in the state. A total of 5,76,942 of this 3 million workforce have already been part of these welfare schemes and Rs 27,93,66,957 has been distributed as assistance to 82,263 workers under different schemes till date.

A total of Rs 709,59,18,596 had been collected as tax from 2008 till January 31, 2015.

Under this scheme, 55,761 labourers have been registered till January 15, 2015 and 57,004 beneficiaries have been given Rs 20,26,85,088. Till December last year, Rs 159,89,60,015 had been collected as tax, sources said.

“The government is also taking note of labourers working outside the state and is in the process of issuing identify cards to them. They will also be able to get the benefits at par with the labourers of the state,” said Subash Singh, Chairman of the board.

The board will celebrate ‘Labourers Week’ from February 21 till 28 to highlight this scheme which will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister on February 21 at Rashtra Bhasha Prachar Samiti. The CM will also take part in the convention organized on February 27 at Sambalpur, Singh said.
