OUAT student’s death in car accident: Odisha police arrest driver

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Feb 7:

The Khandagiri police today arrested the driver of the car which had allegedly hit a female student of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) leading to her death.

The arrested was identified as Maheswar Behera, driver of former Speaker of Odisha Assembly, Kishore Mohanty and hailing from Badamba in Cuttack district.

“I was driving the car carrying some medicines. Two girls alighted from an auto-rickshaw and came in front of the speeding car following which the vehicle hit them. I fled the spot in fear,” said Behera.

Suchismita Biswal, the deceased student who was pursuing her Master of Computer Application (MCA) under the Centre for Post-Graduate Studies (CPGS) in the university, died after being hit by a Tata Safari SUV on Siripur-Fire Station road on February 4 night.

One of her friends identified as Pragyna Tiwari sustained injuries in the accident and is undergoing treatment in hospital.

While police seized the vehicle after the mishap, the driver had managed to flee the spot after the accident.

Demanding arrest of the driver and compensation for the family of Suchismita, OUAT students had yesterday blocked road at Siripur Square here affecting vehicular movement for a while.

They had alleged that the car belongs to the owner of Siddarth Construction who happens to be the brother of Cuttack-Barabati MLA Debashish Samantray.

The Twin City Commissionerate police had yesterday informed that the ownership of the car is still in the name of Sidharth Construction though it was sold out to former Speaker of Odisha Assembly, Kishore Mohanty in 2009.

Police also conducted raid at Siddarth Construction office yesterday and examined the papers of the vehicle. A notice was served to the firm to furnish details of the car.
