Over 100 youths join ‘Hunar Se Rozgar Tak’ course at SHM in Odisha capital

Over 100 young men and women were inducted into a government-sponsored two-month capacity building course, known as “Hunar Se Rozgar Tak”, at the School of Hotel Management (SHM) under the SOA University in the Odisha capital today.

This is a central government initiative aimed at providing skill based hospitality training to people in the age group of 18 to 28 from the economically weaker strata of the society to make them employable in the tourism and hospitality industry.

The institute, which has already trained three batches of trainees under this scheme, has been sanctioned the highest number of 125 seats for the program in Odisha. It is the only hotel management college in the state which is duly approved by the AICTE and offers 4-year bachelor’s degree program in hotel management, 2-year master’s degree program in hotel management and catering technology and doctoral program.

At a ceremonial induction program held at the institute, the Registrar of SOA University, Prof BB Pradhan, who is also the dean of SHM, said the basic objective of the program was to bridge the skill gap in workers engaged in the hospitality sector. It comprised eight-week full time courses in bakery and patisserie as also food production and six-week full time courses in housekeeping and food and beverage service.

SHM was collaborating with the government to create employable skills in the youth who could not pursue highest studies, he said, adding during the training they would undergo industrial exposure training in various bakeries and hotels.

Subrat Dash, General Manager of VITS Group in the city graced the function as the chief guest while Dimple Narula, Managing Director of Dimple’s Kitchen was the guest of honour.|

Dash said the trainees would learn a lot during the training as SHM had good infrastructure and faculty. He advised the trainees to work hard which would make them learn and climb the ladder. “Always have a positive mindset,” he said.

Narula said the two-month program was a platform offered to the trainees to showcase their talent and excel. “You will have a different personality after eight weeks,” she told the trainees while advising them to have clarity about their goal.
