Pay Rs 3 lakh to family of girl killed in school mishap, NHRC to Odisha govt

Bhubaneswar, Aug 18:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Odisha government to pay Rs three lakh as monetary compensation to the next of kin of a seven year old class II girl student who died when an almirah fell on her in the school in July last year.

NHRC_LOGO-2Sony Pradhan, a class II student of Uttarhana UGME School under Chandanpur police limits in Puri district, was critically injured when the almirah inside the class room fell on her on July 29 last year.

She was rushed to the local government hospital from where she was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital,Cuttack. She finally succumbed to her grievous injuries on August 2 last year.

Acting on a complaint filed by young lawyer and human rights activist Prabir Kumar Das the Commission observed that Sony had suffered injuries in the classroom while she was under the care and custody of a Government school. The death of the girl had caused irreparable loss to her family for which the State must bear liability, the NHRC opined.

The NHRC has asked the Odisha chief secretary to make the payment and submit proof of payment within six weeks.
