The committee to be headed by Bismaya Monahty, editor, Ajikali, will have Amit Kumar Mallick (editor, Sakala), Ashok Sahoo (Member, All India Small and Medium Newspaper Federation), Sudhir Panda (editor, Pratidin), Prafulla Mishra (editor, Utkal Samaj) and Sivananda Ray (editor, Kalinga mail) as the other members.

The committee is empowered to meet, discuss and question concerned officials in the Ministry of Information and Public Relation, Odisha and suggest appropriate measures to improve the condition of small and medium newspapers in Odisha, Justice Katju said

“I further direct the Odisha government officials to meet the above committee and discuss with them before any change in advertisement policy or rates,” Justice Katju said at the National Council Meet of All India Small and Medium newspapers Federation here.

The PCI Chairman said small and medium newspapers account for 85 per cent of the total circulation of newspapers in the state. “These newspapers are more intimately in touch with the problems of the common people,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Dr SC Jamir said small and medium newspapers not only need to survive but thrive independently. “It is important to protect small and medium newspaper houses and for that, I believe, financial viability and access to modern printing technology and infrastructure is very much necessary. I am happy that All India Small and Medium Newspaper Federation is committed to sort out various problems that small and medium category newspapers come across,” the Governor said.

Earlier, the federation had submitted a memorandum to the Odisha Governor SC Jamir listing the problems faced by the small and medium news papers in the state and seeking his intervention in sorting them out.
