PHAILIN intensifying, moving ahead : Met dept

The cyclonic storm, PHAILIN over east central Bay of Bengal moved slightly north-westwards, intensified further and lay centred at 5.30 am today as cyclonic storm lay about 850km southeast of Paradip, 900km east-south east of Kalingapatnam, and 950 km east-south east of Visakhapatnam, the last bulletin issued by the Met department at 9 am said.

However, the path projection by various websites seems to suggest Ganjam and Khordha districts would be the worst affected, a weather expert told OST adding all settlements close to the sea along the Odisha coast run the risk of being lashed by 1 to 2 metre high waves.

The system, according to the Met bulletin, would intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It would continue to move northwestwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast between Kalingapatnam and Paradip by October 12 night as a very severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 175-185 kmph.
