PIL in Odisha HC on Konark water logging issue

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Orissa High Court today over drainage of rain water from Konark temple and its conservation.

The petition jointly filed by Dilip Kumar Mohapatra and Abhishek Das have named state chief secretary, Director General (DG) Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Konark Surakshya Samiti, superintendent  ASI, ASI officer-in-charge of Konark, secretary Puri-Konark Development Authority (PKDA), collector Puri and executive officer Konark Notified Area Council as respondents in the case.

The petitioners contended that the conservation of Sun temple which is a world heritage site and is the epitome of architectural excellence of Odia artisans is the responsibility of the government.

Rainwater had accumulated in the premises of the temple during the cyclone Roanu. Water logging is a serious threat to the heritage site, the petitioners cited.

The petitioners apprehended that unless long-lasting measures are taken for drainage of water the temple would collapse.
