Plastic rice in news again in Odisha, probe underway

Sambalpur: Months after the sale of plastic rice was termed as a rumour, it hit the news headlines once again after a woman fell sick here today.

The woman was admitted to a hospital after allegedly consuming plastic rice. Her family filed a written complaint with police.

As per the complaint lodged with Khetarajpur police, Kamal Karmakar, the victim’s son had purchased a packet of ‘Bansiwala’ rice from a godown in the area on Oct 4. The family members slept after consuming the cooked rice at night. However, few of them complained of stomach pain few hours after taking dinner.

Next day, the rice was cooked for lunch. But, Kamal’s mother fell sick and she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Suspecting on the quality of rice bought from the godown, the family lodged the complaint with Khetarajpur police.

Acting on the complaint, police seized the rice packet and launched probe on basis of the address written on the packet and the rice traders’ addresses in Khetarajpur area.

As per the preliminary investigation, the brand name ‘Bansiwala’ written on the packet suggests that the rice packet was brought from a trader in Raipur area. However, the date of packaging and price of rice have not been mentioned on the packet.

The police will crack the ‘plastic rice’ rumour after the probe.

Earlier, the plastic rice allegation had triggered panic in Nuapada and Cuttack districts.

After the debate on availability of plastic eggs in market riddled the consumers, they need to take extra care before buying rice from market.
