Polavaram project: Central team to meet Odisha CM today

A delegation of the Union Water Resources ministry, led by the additional secretary, would meet chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat here this afternoon to discuss about the Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh.

During the meeting, the additional secretary will have a detailed presentation of the project.

This was informed by the BJD MP Tathagat Satpathy on Thursday.

He said the a delegation of the BJD MPs had met Union Water Resources minister Uma Bharti recently and discussed about the project.

“We had requested the Union minister to consider the demands of the Odisha government not to raise the height of the barrage to avoid inundation in South Odisha districts of Malkangiri and Gajapati districts”, Satpathy said.

It may be mentioned that apart from the BJD MPs, the MPs from Telangana had also met the Union minister and requested her to take steps to lower the height of the Polavaram barrage as these two states would be severely affected if the height of the barrage is raised.

Official sources said that the team would also have a discussion on the proposed Mahanadi-Godavari river inter-linking project.
