Poll official suspended for checking Modi’s helicopter in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Election Commission of India (ECI) today suspended a poll official for giving order to check Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter in Odisha’s Sambalpur on Tuesday. Modi was in Sambalpur district to address an election rally.

The official, Mohammed Mohsin, a Karnataka Cadre officer of the Indian Administrative Services deputed as a special observer, had “not acted in conformity with the ECI’s instructions” that have made an exception for SPG protectees like the Prime Minister, the ECI order said.

The suspension came into force immediately and he will be posted at Sambalpur till further orders, it added.

The action came after a Deputy Election Commissioner visited Sambalpur district and met with the Returning Officer and District Magistrate Shubham Saxena over the issue on Wednesday.

Worth mentioning here that the Election Commission officials have been conducting surprise checks on vehicles of prominent leaders in different cities, with “flying squads” investigating whether anything cash or other suspicious material is being carried by them to influence voters.
