Pope Francis expresses grief over Odisha train mishap

Bhubaneswar: Pope Francis has expressed grief over the train mishap in Balasore district of Odisha on June 2.

Earlier, several world leaders including UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Russian President Vladimir Putin, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau expressed their condolences over the mishap that had claimed the lives of 275 passengers and caused injuries to 1,000 others.

“Let’s pray together for the many victims of the railway accident that occurred two days ago in India. I am close to the wounded and their families. May the heavenly Father welcome the souls of the deceased into his Kingdom,” said the Pope in a twitter post today.

Notably, the mishap involving Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and a goods train is stated to be the worst railway accident in India since 1995.
