Post Master gets 7-yr RI for embezzling deposits in Odisha

Bhadrak: A post master of Aharapada branch post office was awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for misappropriation of deposits in Bhadrak district.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Debadatta Patnaik, Bhadrak, convicted Kamalakanta Nayak under section 409 of IPC and sentenced him to seven years rigorous imprisonment in a 2016 postal deposit embezzlement case.

The convict was also slapped with Rs10,000 fine failing to which he will undergo 1 year rigorous imprisonment.

Nayak was accused of embezzling Rs 35 lakh deposited by 185 customers at the Aharapada branch post office. The then Bhadrak Circle Postal Superintendent Paramananda Sahoo came to know about the massive misappropriation of postal deposits during an audit conducted in the year 2016 following which a written complaint was lodged at the Bhadrak Rural Police Station.

Based on an allegation, Police registered a case was registered under sections 409, 420, 467, 468 and 461 of IPC and initiated probe. The accused was arrested on August 23, 2017.

During hearing of the case, the court today convicted him under section 409 of IPC and acquitted him under sections 420, 468 and 471 of IPC due to lack of evidence.
