Post-poll violence in Odisha’s Utkal varsity: Students asked to vacate hostel

Students of the Utkal University in Odisha capital have been asked to vacate hostel by the varsity authorities following post-poll violence in the campus.

While the girl students have been directed to leave ladies hostels by 4 PM today, the boys have been told to vacate hostels by 5 PM today, informed PG Council Chairman Ranjan Kumar Bal.

Notably, two rival student groups had clashed in the campus yesterday after declaration of students’ union election results leading to injuries to at least three students.

According to reports, supporters of Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) clashed while the latter was demonstrating in front of the university main gate.

The situation came under control only after police intervention. The cops had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Security arrangements have been tightened to avoid any untoward incident in the campus, however, the situation continues to remain tense.

It may be recalled here that on the day of poll, one of the NSUI supporters was injured after being attacked by a group of students in the university campus. The victim and his supporters yesterday met the vice chancellor demanding action against the faction supported by BCJD – whom they blamed for the incident. Besides, a police complaint was lodged in Saheed Nagar police station.
