Prafulla Ghadai, Mohan Jena lose out as BJD names candidates for 4 LS, 19 Odisha Assembly seats

Big heads like former Finance minister Prafulla Ghadai and Jajpur MP Mohan Jena have rolled while some others like Health minister Damodar Rout, Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani and Jagatsignhpur MLA Bishnu Das have managed to barely scrape through as the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Naveen Patnaik announced the list of party candidates for four Lok Sabha seats and 19 Assembly constituencies this evening.

Ghadai has been replaced by his son Pritiranjan in Sukinda, the seat he represented in the last Assembly, while cine star Akash Das Nayak has been fielded from the Korei Assembly constituency earlier represented by the junior Ghadai.

Rita Tarai has replaced Mohan Jena in the Jajpur Lok Sabha seat while Shankuntala Laguri has replaced sitting MP Jasobanta Laguri in Keonjhar. Prasanna Patsani has managed to hold on to the Bbhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat while Dr Kulamani Samal has been fielded from the Jagatsinghpur parliamentary constituency earlier represented by CPI’s Bibhu Tarai, who is now the Congress candidate from the same seat.

Besides the two incumbent MPs, eight sitting MLAs have also lost out in the race for tickets. Among those who lost out on nomination Assembly constituencies are former BJD chief whip Rabi Narayan Pani in Pallahada and Prashanta Nanda in Begunia and Arabinda Dhali in Jayadev.

Pani was replaced by former MLA Mahesh Sahu, Nanda by Prashant Jagdev and Dhali by Sashi Bhusan Behera.

Behera is the fourth Rajya Sabha MP contesting the coming elections and the third to be fielded in the Assembly elections.

The eight sitting MLAs who have been denied tickets this time are: Prafulla Chandra Ghadai (Sukinda), Rabi Narayan Pani (Pallahara), Nabin Chandra Nanda (Dhenkanal), Arabinda Dhali (Jayadev), Prashant Nanda (Begunia), Rabindra Bhoi (Tirtol), Parsuram Panigrahi (Simulia) and Rabindra Mallick (Kakatpur)

The BJD president also announced that cine star Anubhav Mohanty will be fielded as a candidate in the Rajya Sabha election.

The list of candidates for 19 Assembly seats announced today is as follows:

Dr Damodar Rout-Paradip, Dr Rajeswari Mallick-Tirtol, Bishnu Das-Jagatsinghpur, Prasant Muduli-Balikuda-Ersama, Akash Das Nayak-Korei, Pritiranjan Ghadei-Sukinda, Hrusikesh Nayak-Patana, Sashi Bhusan Behera-Jayadev, Bijaya Mohanty-Bhubaneswar Central, Ashok Panda- Ekamra Bhubaneswar, Rama Ranjan Baliarsingh-Satyabadi, Surendra Sethi-Kakatpur, Prasant Jagdev-Begunia, Mahesh Sahu-Pallahara, Badrinarayan Patra-Ghasipura, Jiban Pradip Das-Baleswar, Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi-Simulia, Jugal Patnaik-Bhadrak, Saroj Samal-Dhenkanal.
