Pregnant woman carried in sling for 16 km to hospital in Odisha

Kalahandi: Even after several media reports about medical negligence and healthcare service failure in Odisha, the faulty system came to fore yet again after a pregnant woman was carried in a sling for 16 km to a hospital in Kalahandi district.

The incident was reported in Kansabundel village in Trilochanpur under Lanjigarh block where a woman was taken to hospital in the sling after ambulance could not reach home due to road blockade.

According to reports, the ASHA worker called on 102 for ambulance to take the pregnant woman to the hospital after she suffered labour pain yesterday.

However, the ambulance could not reach home after a fallen tree blocked the road. Without having any option, the kin of the woman had to carry her in a sling for 16 km. Later, she was rushed to Lanjigarh hospital through an ambulance.

The woman delivered a baby girl in the hospital and both are stated to be in good condition.

The incident took place just few days after a pregnant woman in the same district was carried on a raft to the hospital due to ambulance failure and her newborn baby died.
