President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday greeted people on the eve of Raksha Bandhan and said "may the festival be an occasion for re-dedication to the well being of women, particularly the girl child.
In his message, Mukherjee extended his warm greetings and good wishes to all citizens here and abroad, and said: "The festival of Rakhi spreads harmony and celebrates brotherhood. Rakhi is a sacred thread of protection embellished with the affection of a sister for her brother. It symbolises the inseparable bond of love between brothers and sisters".
He said that the gesture is "not a mere ritual", but a "powerful act that obligates everyone to ensure the safety and security of women".
Modi said: "Tomorrow the whole country will celebrate the festival of Raksha Bandhan. On this auspicious occasion of rakhi, I extend warm wishes to the people of the country."
