Prize catch for Odisha fisherman; fish sold at whopping Rs 1.77 lakh

Bhadrak: A fish locally known as Telia has been sold for whopping over Rs 1.70 lakh in an auction in Chandbali area of Bhadrak district.

The fish weighing about 22 kg was auctioned at Chandinipal village under Chandbali block today.

A large number of people gathered around the auction site to see the fish and participate in the bidding process for its possession. The initial minimum bid for the fish was Rs 6,000 per kg and it reached upto Rs 8,000 per kg.

Finally, the large fish was sold at a whopping Rs 1.77 lakh to a Mumbai-based pharmaceutical firm in the auction.

Source said that the fish is known for its medicinal value and in high demand in various countries.

As per preliminary information, a fisherman of Talachua area who had ventured into the sea for fishing during low pressure-induced rain two days ago netted the Telia fish. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, he moved to Chandinipal area instead of travelling to Kolkata for selling the fish.

Earlier, two fishes of Telia species were sold for Rs 6,000 per kg at the village. This time, the fish fetched Rs 8,000 per kg.
