Probe into death of three pregnant women in Odisha hospital begins

Acting on the directive of the Odisha government to probe into the death of three pregnant women who died after Caesarean section at the VSS Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR), previously known as the VSS Medical College and Hospital, on Friday night, a four-member team of doctors from the SCB Medical College and Hospital from Cuttack arrived here this morning.

Director, Medical Education and Training (DMET) Babaji Charan Das had already arrived at VIMSAR late for an on the spot inquiry on Saturday night.

The DMET said the SCB team will have a joint investigation with an expert team of doctors of VIMSAR. The team will later submit its report to the state government.

“The joint director of the SCB team and the director of VIMSAR will have separate investigations after which the SCB team and a team of specialist doctors of VIMSAR will conduct a joint probe into the incident. It is not correct to give any opinion without having a scientific investigation. It is necessary to ascertain the exact cause which led to the death of the three pregnant women,” Das told the media here.

Meanwhile, the Drugs Inspector, Sambalpur, Priya Ranjan Nayak arrived at Burla late on Saturday night and seized all medicines kept at the Gynaecology ward.

“We have collected the samples of the medicines supplied by the government to the hospital, which are used during child delivery and will send them for test at the laboratories. Some of the sample medicines would be sent to Bhubaneswar while others would be sent to other states for test,” Nayak added.

Tension prevailed at VIMSAR soon after the arrival of the team from Cuttack as the kin of the deceased demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.
