Bhubaneswar, July 18:

Subhashree Panda alias Mili, the wife of  top Odisha Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda who was arrested in Brahmapur late last night, has demanded that her husband be immediately produced in a court.

mily panda“Why are they not producing him in a court?” Mili Panda asked in her first reaction to the arrest of Sabyasachi.

She claimed that her husband’s arrest was the first step on the path to his return to the mainstream.

Asked how Sabyasachi can return to the mainstream since he has several cases of murder pending against him, Mili shot back; “He is not involved in any of the cases slapped against him. One can find out from the Election Commission that many of our elected MLAs and minsters have murder cases pending against them. If they can become honourable MLAs and even ministers, why not my husband?”

“We have been trying to persuade him to join the mainstream for the last two years. I hope his arrest would finally pave the way for his return to mainstream,” she said.

She accused the state government of reneging on its commitment to bring her husband into the mainstream.

The Maoist leader’s wife rubbished the allegation that a pistol, ammunition and half a kg of gold was seized from her husband during his arrest in the Badbazar area of Berhanpur town.

“The police itself says he is sick and had gone to Berhampur for treatment. Does that mean he terrorised his doctor with a revolver? As for the gold allegedly seized from him, he was not a woman who would carry jewellery around,” she said.
