Protest against Vedanta in Odisha capital

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, July 31:

Describing the public hearing conducted yesterday for expansion of Vedanta’s refinery at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district of Odisha as ‘unconstitutional’, a host of political and social organizations and concerned citizens protested against Vedanta Resources Ltd here today.

Anti Vedanta protest“Since Vedanta has no bauxite mines of its own, the public hearing is illegal. It would bring danger to life of Dongaria tribals living inside Niyamgiri,” said one of the protestors.

“We feel that a nexus has already been built between the Vedanta Resources Ltd and both Central and State governments to implement the plan of the Company,” he said.

With the Gram Sabha resolutions having already gone against the Company, it has lost its legal status to be there at Lanjigarh, the protestors pointed out demanding that the MoUs with Vedanta Resources Ltd. be cancelled and the company asked to leave Odisha.

Protests are being organised all over the world including Delhi, Goa, Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu), Lusaka & Andola (Zambia), Johannesburg (South Africa) and Port of Spain (Trinidad & Tobago) today to mark The Global Day of Action Against Vedanta, the organisers said.
