Punjab Warriors thrash Kalinga Lancers 7-3 in HIL opener

JAYPEE Punjab Warriors thrashed IDCO-MCL Kalinga Lancers by 7-3 goals in the inaugural match of the Hockey India League (HIL) played at the new Hockey Turf at Kalinga Stadium here on Tuesday evening.

Punjab Warriors led 5-0 at the interval; the goals coming at 8.05 pm, 8.29 pm, 8.36 pm, 8.36 pm and 8.41 pm.

Kalinga Lancers, however, put up a spirited fight back in the second half scoring their first goal through a penalty corner at 8.57 pm and then following it up with another at 9,07 pm, again through a penalty corner. They scored their third and last goal 13 minutes before the final whistle at 9.40 pm.

Punjab Warriors, however, netted twice in the second half – at 9.00 pm and 9.13 pm – to take their tally to an unassailable seven.
Jamie Dwyer, the captain of Punjab Warriors received a cheque for Rs 25,000 from Dillip Tirkey, MP and former Captain of Indian Hockey Team. Besides, Sandip Singh and Dharamvir Singh (Man of the Match) received cheques of Rs 25,000 each for their outstanding performance in the match.

Earlier, Chief Minister (CM) Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the match, the first to be played under floodlights at the newly built hockey turf. He thanked the organisers for organising the international tournament in Odisha for the first time.

The Chief Mnister spent some time speaking to the players and officials of both the sides.
