Question leak in Odisha police test: House adjourned till 3

Bhubaneswar, Mar 16:

The Odisha Assembly had to be adjourned twice today – first till 12.30 pm and then again till 3 pm – as opposition members created a ruckus in the House demanding a statement from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the question leak that led to the cancellation of the written test for recruitment of constables in Odisha Police yesterday.

As soon as the Question Hour began, Opposition members were up in arms demanding a statement on the issue from the Chief Minister and an independent inquiry into the case.

While Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra demanded an investigation by an independent agency into the leak, Congress Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati was seen trying to climb on to the Speaker’s dais and shouting slogans along with a few other Congress MLAs.

As the Opposition members refused to go back to their seats despite several appeals, Speaker Niranjan  Pujari adjourned the House till 12.30 pm.

But there was no respite from the pandemonium when the House resumed with Opposition members sticking to their guns.

Bowing to the demand, the Speaker asked the government to place a statement on the issue in the afternoon before adjourning the House for a second time till 3 pm.

Rejecting the Crime Branch probe announced by the government into the case, Congress asked for the investigation to be handed over to the CBI.

“Earlier we have seen large-scale corruption in recruitment of constables during 2003-2004. Crores had been pocketed. The vigilance investigation that started back then is yet to be finished. Now, when we see examination papers being sold, we hold the Chief Minister responsible. We demand a CBI inquiry into the case as a crime branch investigation will do no good,” said Bahinipati.

“Question papers have been leaked in practically every examination – class 10, +2, in University, OPSC, OTET and so on. Now, it has happened in the test for recruitment in police. We need to protect the lives and people. Naveen Patnaik should resign immediately. He doesn’t have credibility to sit in this position for one more moment,” said Leader of BJP legislature party Basanta Panda.
