Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu and Minister of state for Railways Manoj Kumar Sinha are scheduled to launch the Wi-Fi facility at Bhubaneswar Railway Station.

The high-speed Internet service provided by Google in collaboration with RailTel, the telecom arm of the Indian Railways, today went live at nine more stations, including Bhubaneswar Railway Station. With this, the service is now available in 10 railway stations across the country.

After its first launch at Mumbai Central in January this year, the free WiFi service has been extended to Bhubaneswar, Pune, Bhopal, Ranchi, Raipur, Vijayawada, Kacheguda (Hyderabad), Ernakulam Junction (Kochi) and Vishakhapatnam where passengers and visitors will be able to access the service with smartphones for free.

Under the Digital India initiative, Railways will be providing internet facilities to the passengers at 100 busiest stations by the end of this year. The service will be rolled out at 400 stations across the country covering all major rail premises in subsequent phases.

Railtel owns a Pan-India optic fiber network exclusively on railway track. It has laid out over 45,000 kms of optic fibre networks across the country, which Google will utilise for its Wi-Fi.

As per the plan, Railtel will be the Internet service provider (ISP) while Google will provide the Wireless Area Networks (WAN) and will set-up the points of access at platforms.
