Bhubaneswar, Nov 13:

Nalini Acharya, mother of Raja Acharya who is undergoing life imprisonment for the murder of judo coach Biranchi Das, on Wednesday filed a defamation suit for Rs 7 crore against the makers of the Saif Ali-starrer ‘Bullet Raja’, which she claimed was based on the story of her son and was defamatory to him.

In her petition filed in the court of the civil Judge (Senior Division) here, Mrs Acharya, a resident of F/13, BJB Nagar, requested the court to declare the film illegal, stop the release of the movie throughout the country and order the defendants to pay Rs 7 crore towards the damage caused to the reputation of the family.

She named Director-Producer of the film Tigmanshu Dhullia, Fox Star Studio India Pvt Ltd. and actor Saif Ali Khan as the defendants.

The court set the hearing in the case for tomorrow.

The film misrepresented facts and was derogatory to Raja, Swagat Ray, Raja’s counsel said.

“The matter came to my client’s notice after several people told her that the film is based on her son’s story, but misrepresented the facts. A search on the internet confirmed what she had been told,” he said.

Raja’s mother searched the website of the film through google.com and found that the film promo was indeed based upon her son’s case, he said.

“It also came to her notice that the defendants were attempting to release the film soon throughout the country and are expecting to rake in more than Rs 100 crore. She feels the release of the film will cause irreparable damage to the family,” the counsel said. “My client and her relatives have become victims of the greed of the makers of the film,” he added.

Besides, it is illegal to release the film based on Raja’s story at a time when the case is sub judice in the Orissa High Court, Ray said.

Raja Acharya was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Biranchi Das, the man who made child marathoner Budhia Singh world famous, by the sessions court here. He has challenged the conviction in the High Court.

The defamation case will have a hearing tomorrow.

With every respect to Nalini Acharya as a mother I must say that she should have thought of the prestige of the family when her son first put his step on the wrong track. I do not know what ‘Bullet Raja’ story reveals. But the confirmation of Nalini that ‘Bullet Raja’ film reflects the life story of her son will create much interest among others to watch the movie.
