A fine bowling spell by seamer Abhimanyu Mithun put Karnataka on top against hosts Odisha on the first day of the Ranji Trophy Group A match at the DRIEMS ground near Tangi on Thursday.

In reply to Odisha’s first innings score of 226, the visitors finished the day at 22 for no loss.

Put into bat, Odisha began disastrously. Barring a defiant knock of 98 by Abhilash Mallick, the other top order batsmen did not last long.

With the hosts reeling at 66 for 7, the tail-enders put up a strong fight with Alok Sahu, Basant Mohanty and SB Pradhan chipping in with 14, 19 and 34 respectively, taking the score to a respectable 226.

For Karnataka, Mithun was the most successful bowler with 6 for 52. He was duly assisted by AA Kazi (2 for 28) and HS Sharath and S Aravind with one wicket each.

At close of play, the visitors were 22 without loss with Robin Uthappa and MA Agarwal remaining not out with 6 and 11 respectively.
