Rape cases in Odisha have increased by 9.77% in 2014

Rape cases in Odisha have increased by 9.77 percent since 2013, reveals the White Paper-2014 on the law and order situation in the state presented by the Home department in the State Assembly today.

rapeWhile a total of 1832 rape cases were registered in 2013, the number has gone up to 2011 in 2014.

However, there has been a marginal fall in the number of murder cases. While 1454 murder cases were registered in 2013, 1450 cases were lodged in 2000, the White Paper said.

Criminal cases in the state in general have also gone up in 2014. As compared to 90,184 criminal cases registered in 2013, the number has gone up to 93,657 during 2014 of which 89,808 cases have been found as true.

Out of a total of 76,156 cases charge sheeted, 74 percent cases have been resolved, it added.

There has been 3.8 percent rise in the total number of criminal cases in 2014 as compared to 90,184 in 2013.

The White Paper also said a total of 554 dacoity, 1828 loot and 9,410 theft cases have been registered by March this year.

Out of a total of 76,156 cases charge sheeted, 74 percent cases have been resolved, it added.

Referring to the left-wing extremism in the state, the White Paper has stated that the state has witnessed substantial fall in the Maoist activities in Jajpur, Gajapati, Nuapada, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Ganjam, Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh and Keonjhar district in 2014 while the activities of the red rebels in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nuapada, Bolangir, Rayagada, Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts have been brought under control.

As many as 99 Maoists including the leader of Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh Nachika Linga surrendered before police this year, the report mentioned.
