Raped by husband, friends, Odisha woman escapes from confinement

A 26-year-old married woman today managed to escape from the clutches of her husband and some of his friends who had allegedly gang raped her before confining her to a house in Saheed Nagar area in the Odisha capital.

In her complaint lodged with the police, the woman has also alleged that her husband, along with his aides, was trying to send her to Jhansi.

“My husband and his friends raped me in Brahmagiri and later brought me to Bhubaneswar. I did not know that I had been brought to Bhubaneswar until I managed to escape from their clutches. They tonsured me and tried to send me to Jhansi,” said the victim.

After escaping from the house in Saheed Nagar where she had been kept in confinement, the woman, a native of Bramhagiri area in Puri district, first went to Saheed Nagar police station to lodge a complaint, which later handed over the case to Mahila police. Mahila police registered a gang-rape case and started investigation into the matter.

According to the victim, she had married to one Saroj Kumar Pradhan of Brahmagiri area on February 24 last year. But her happiness did not last long after her marriage as her in-laws started demanding dowry from her. When she failed to fulfill their demand, her in-laws started torturing her physically as well as mentally.

She alleged that her husband, along with some of his friendsl raped her in her village in Brahmagiri and brought her to the State capital on January 27.

A team of Mahila police officials will leave for Brahmagiri for investigation into the case since the incident occurred there.
