Rare Heart Surgery in KIMS for the First Time in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, July 19:

Doctors of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a constituent of KIIT University in Odisha, successfully performed a bypass heart surgery through lateral thoractomy approach, a KIMs release said here today.

KIMS operationThe patient Upendra Mohanta (59), a resident of Palashpanga of Keonjhar district, was suffering from left main coronary artery disease. After admission in KIMS hospital, a team of doctors including Dr. Bana Bihari Mishra, Dr. Ashok Badamalick and Dr. D. Senapati performed the operation through lateral thoractomy approach. This is first time such surgery has been successfully performed in Odisha, according to sources.

Commonly, this kind of surgery is done through sternotomy approach, where chances of infection, mobility and mortality are very high. However, lateral thoractomy approach excludes these risks.

In yet another instance of providing immediate and efficient health service to the public, KIMS saved a serious heart patient by providing timely shock therapy. Mr. Bijay Bhatt (45) from Baranga area was admitted to KIMS after suffering from a heart attack. However, family members decided to shift him to another hospital after preliminary treatment. But, on the way the patient’s heart arrested and they had to rush back to KIMS. Shock Therapy was performed on the patient by Dr. Panchanan Sahoo, Dr. Bivutendra Mohanty, Dr. Y. J. K Reddy and Dr. Satakshy Malakar, enabling the patient to recover.
