Ratha Saptami Today, 28 January 2023: Tithi Timing, Rituals, Importance

Ratha Saptami is observed on the ‘saptami’ (7th day) during the Shukla Paksha of the month of ‘Magha’ in the Hindu calendar. This festival is devoted to Sun God and is also popularly known as ‘Surya Jayanti’, ‘Magh Jayanti’ or ‘Magha Saptami’.

Ratha Saptami 2023 Date: January 28, Saturday.

Tithi Begins: January 27, 2023 9:10 AM.

Tithi Ends: January 28, 2023 8:43 AM.

Rituals: Devotees wake up early in the morning and take holy bath. Ratha Saptami Snan is an important ritual of the day and should be performed at the time of sunrise.

After the ritualistic bath, devotees offer ‘Arghyadan’ to Sun God at the time of sunrise.

It is performed by offering water slowly from a small kalash in Namaskar Mudra to Surya Bhagwan by facing towards Him in the standing position.

Some devotees also perform this ritual 12 times along with chanting twelve different names of Surya Bhagwan, each time.

The Sun God is then worshipped with  red flowers, kapoor and dhoop.

Chanting ‘Gayatri Mantra’ and reciting ‘Surya Sahasranaam’ is considered very auspicious on this day.
