Rich tributes were paid to the globally renowned Indian historian, Prof. Bipan Chandra, who passed away on August 30 at the age of 86, at a memorial meeting held in the department of History, Ravenshaw University in Odisha on Wednesday .
The meeting was chaired by Dr. LaxmiKanta Mishra, the departmental head.
A large number of university students and faculty members including Prof. Chandi Prasad Nanda, Dr. Subrat Kumar Acharya, Dr. Priyadarshi Kar, Dr. Santosh Kumar Malua, Dr. Hemant Kumar Parida, Dr. TirthaPrakash Jena and Prof. NiranjanBarik, who were present in the meeting, spoke at length on the great thinker, historian and teacher..
Two minute silence was observed on the occasion as a mark respect to the departed soul.
The speakers shared their valuable views on the eminent historian and personal experiences of their association with the legendary teacher.
Dr. Kar sketched Prof. Chandra’s biographical details.
In his concluding address, Prof Nanda focused on the seminal contribution of Bipan Chandra to critical scholarship in the domain of modern and contemporary Indian history and politics while sharing his perceptions about the ‘man’ and the ‘institution’ based on his prolonged association with him as a student and research scholar.
