Red fear: Families desert homes in Odisha’s Malkangiri

As Maoists continue to rule the roost in the cut-off region of Chitrakonda in Odisha’s Malkangiri district; families are fleeing their homes out of fear of the Red rebels.

Seven families of Sanyasiguda village under Andrapalli panchayat from the cut-off region yesterday deserted their homes out of fear of Maoists and sought shelter at the Kudumulugumma police station, police said.

These families have been provided with temporary accommodation at the Kudumulugumma block office, till arrangements are made for their rehabilitation, police added.

“33 persons of seven families of Sanyasiguda village have yesterday deserted the village out of fear of Maoists. For the last one year, families have been deserting villages in the cut-off region out of fear of Maoists. However, Maoists are losing support base in this area. Food and shelter have been arranged for the displaced persons. The district administration has been requested for their rehabilitation,” said Mitrabhanu Mohapatra, SP Malkangiri.

Notably, earlier, around 100 families had fled their homes in the cut-off region out of fear of Maoists who are very much active in the region.
