Refurbished ‘Utkalika’ showroom inaugurated in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar, July 23:

In an effort to meet the changing needs tastes and demands of foreign tourists and local people, Odisha’s Handloom and Textile Minister Snehagini Chhuria today inaugurated the extended handicraft showroom of Odisha State Co-operative Handicrafts Corporation Limited (Utkalika) at the market building here.

The Minister said it would help the costumers to get their exquisite handicrafts designed by Odisha weavers in the state.

While the Odisha government has made a budget allocation of Rs 181.24 lakh for the construction of the show room, the corporation has received Rs 134.98 lakh so far, informed the Minister.

The corporation has opened 14 show rooms in the name and style of “Utkalika” both inside and outside the state to undertake marketing of Handicrafts. Besides, it regularly organises exhibitions in important cities to augment its sales turnover. Steps are also being taken by them to export Handicrafts goods, sources said.

The outlet of Utkalika in the Market Building has a grand collection of traditional arts and crafts. The collections range from applique works, hand woven clothes, ‘dhokra’ (metal casting), palm-leaf prints, ‘pattachitras’ (traditional Oriyan paintings), tribal jewelry, and stone and wood carvings.
