Relief for Odisha sprinter Dutee as CAS suspends IAAF Hyperandrogenism regulations for 2 months

Bhubaneswar: In a major relief for Indian sprinter Dutee Chand from Odisha, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) suspended the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Hyperandrogenism regulations for an additional two months.

The CAS suspended the “IAAF Regulation Governing Eligibility of Females with Hyperandrogenism to Compete in Women’s Competition” (the “Hyperandrogenism Regulations”) and asked the international athletics body to file scientific evidence within the period or else the regulations will be invalid.

Should the IAAF not file any scientific evidence within the additional two-month period granted by the CAS Panel (i.e. end of September 2017), the Hyperandrogenism Regulations will be declared void, said a CAS release.

Earlier, the CAS panel had suspended the IAAF Hyperandrogenism regulations until July 24, 2017 in order to give the IAAF the opportunity to provide the CAS with scientific evidence about the quantitative relationship between enhanced testosterone levels and improved athletic performance in hyperandrogenic athletes.

With the suspension of IAAF Hyperandrogenism regulations for additional two months, Dutee is now eligible to take part in both national and international championships.

Based upon the agreement of the parties and at the approval of the Panel, the Hyperandrogenism Regulations have been suspended for an additional two months. During such extended suspension, Dutee Chand remains eligible to compete in both national and international level athletics events, the release added.

On the other hand, Dutee is all set to visit London as she has been invited by the IAAF to participate in World Athletics Championships even after failing in women’s 100m event to qualify for the international competition.

As the target number of 56 women athletes for 100m event was not reached for the World Athletics Championships scheduled from August 4-13 in London, the IAAF offered Dutee a quota entry to take part in women’s 100m race.
