Revenue Assistant of Tehsil office held in Odisha for embezzling govt funds

Dabugaon: A Senior Revenue Assistant of Dabugaon Tehsil office was detained by the Dabugaon Police in Nabarangpur district today for allegedly misappropriating government funds.

Based on a complaint filed by Dabugaon Tahsildar Sandhya Somarath, the Dabugaon Police took the Senior Revenue Assistant, Chandana Mondal on charges of embezzling over Rs 63 lakh government funds.

As per the complaint, on May 24, Mondal put up a challan form with correction of the billed amount before the Dabugaon Tahsildar for approval. Suspecting something wrong the Tahsildar asked Mondal to update the bank passbook of the Tehsil office.

But, the Senior Revenue Assistant had been dilly-dallying visiting the bank for passbook update citing rush at the bank. Subsequently the Tahsildar informed the higher-ups about the matter.

On May 26, a 12-member team led by Nabarangpur Sub-Collector Bhaskar Raita visited the Dabugaon Tehsil office and examined the official documents. During the official inquiry, it was found out since September 2020 Mondal had been misappropriating government money through various means.

During interrogation today evening Mondal fell sick and was admitted to Nabarangpur District Headquarters Hospital. Later he was shifted to Koraput hospital in a critical condition.

Also, a bank messenger of SBI, Dabugaon branch has been suspected to be involved in the irregularities.

After registering case no 94/2021 at Dabugaon police station, the police are investigating the alleged irregularities, a police official said.
