Rise in rape, murder cases in 2015 in Odisha’s Twin City

There has been a rise in the number of murder, rape and theft cases registered under Cuttack-Bhubaneswar police Commissionerate in 2015, according to annual crime review by the department.

The findings of annual review of crimes registered in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack was revealed by Commissioner of Police Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma here yesterday.

There is a worrying trend of an increase in number of crimes registered in the Twin City in 2015, with a low solving rate of the crimes.

Last year, there have been 66 murders in the Twin City where Bhubaneswar witnessed 44 murders and Cuttack 11. Among these, 15 murders in Bhubaneswar and 13 in Cuttack were dowry-related deaths.

Both Cuttack and Bhubaneswar have reported 129 rape cases in 2015. Within Bhubaneswar last year, 87 rape cases were registered in various police stations in the capital city; while in Cuttack 42 cases have been registered. Two gang rape cases were also registered last year in Bhubaneswar.

Among the rape cases, 59 cases were of minors in Bhubaneswar. Among the rape cases, 45 in Bhubaneswar and 31 in Cuttack were love affair related.

Similarly, there were 925 accidents and 219 deaths in the Twin City were caused due to accidents in 2015, majority of the mishaps have taken place on National Highways. In Bhubaneswar, 600 accidents took place which lead to 175 deaths, while 572 people were admitted to hospital in a critical condition. In Cuttack, 325 accidents took place last year which lead to 44 deaths.

There were 13 cases of dacoities in Bhubaneswar. Police have arrested 11 dacoits in the capital city and four in Cuttack. Bhubaneswar reported 256 loot cases while Cuttack has reported 114 cases. In 2015, Bhubaneswar saw 1788 thefts and Cuttack registered 541 thefts.

There were 831 cases of cheating cases registered in both Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. In Bhubaneswar 53 builders have been arrested for cheating while 11 builders have been arrested on cheating charges in Cuttack last year.

In 2015, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate of Police collected a fine of  Rs 3,75,52,600 from drunken driving, while fines for driving without helmet or without seat belts has earned the exchequer Rs 2,45,91,090.

There were 21 cases of sex racket busted by the Police Commissionerate in 2015 and 75 accused were arrested in connection with this.

Notably, the Commissioner of Police R P Sharma will soon join as the Vigilance Director after a recent reshuffle in the IPS cadre.
