In a tragic incident, 14-year old Saswat Sekhar Mohanty, a class-IX student of DAV Public School, Rourkela drowned in river Brahmani near Tarkara Pump House today while taking a bath with his three other friends.Rourkela drowning incident

Source said the school was closed today on account of Good Friday and Saswat's father Deepti Ranjan Mohanty, a lecturer in Rourkela Municipal College, was also out of station. Saswat went to play cricket with his friends in a ground at Civil Township near Model School and about 11.30 am he and his three other friends -Sudam Mahanta, Jitendra Kissan and Arbit Oram- went  to take bath in Brahmani river.

While taking bath all of them drowned and shouted for help. The local people, who rushed to rescue them,  managed to save only three. Saswat could not be saved because he had been trapped in the middle of a whirlpool.

The ODRAF team and police fished out Swasat's body after an two hour long operation.
