Ruins of Buddhist sculptures discovered in Odisha

In a major breakthrough, ruins of Buddhist sculptures have been discovered in the Kelua River bed under Dharmasala tehsil in Jajpur district of Odisha.

Eminent Buddhist researcher Nrushingha Charan Sahoo discovered the century old sculptures from the river bed during his research conducted about Brahmani-Kelua island area.

The ruins of sculptures including a residential place belonging to 7th or 8th century Buddhists and an ‘Arghya stupa’, carved out of the Brajagiri and Ratnagiri stones, were discovered, said Sahoo.

The sculptures were destroyed due to the river water entered into the land during the rainy season before the construction of bridges over the Brahmani River by the British, he said.

The sculptures were expected to have been ruined during Som dynasty out of negligence, he added.
