Tangi (Khordha), Dec 27:

Even as the Odisha government is drawing much flak for its inefficient handling of the situation leading to the alarming spread of killer jaundice in the district headquarters city of Sambalpur, the detection of 23 cases of jaundice in Kantalbai village under Tangi block in Khordha district has become a cause for headache for the beleaguered government and the district administration here.

Officials said that cases of jaundice were detected four days back and 23 persons have been affected so far.

While a medical team that was rushed to the village has been camping at the village 24 hours to monitor the situation as well as provide medical care, Khordha collector Niranjan Sahu and the district’ s Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) S P Mishra have visited the village to take stock of the situation.

Officials said the spread of the disease could be due to consumption of contaminated water. Disinfection of water bodies is being undertaken and awareness campaigns are being undertaken to caution the locals on the cause and prevention of the disease.

“We suspect the cause of the disease’s spread could be consumption of contaminated water. We have ordered disinfection of water sources and will launch an awareness drive on the cause and prevention of the water borne disease. Water samples and blood specimens of the affected people have been collected and sent for examination,” said the Collector.

“Our team is camping in the village. We have sent blood specimens and water samples for examination. We are fully geared to tackle the situation. We suspect water contamination to be the cause behind the disease,” said SP Mishra, CDMO Khordha.

“Drinking water is a major problem here and now it’s jaundice. We have no potable water sources in our village and have to fetch it from other places. Many people have been afflicted with jaundice”, said Lata Parida, a woman of the village.
