Sec 144 clamped after violent clash at Vedanta refinery plant site

Lanjigarh: Tension ran high at Lajigarh unit of mining conglomerate Vedanta’s alumina refinery plant site after one person was killed in agitators-security personnel clash here today.

As many as 40 agitators were injured in the face-off. In view of the violence, the district administration clamped section 144 outside the plant.

According to reports, the clash erupted after the displaced locals of Rengupali village launched an agitation in front of Vedanta gate demanding jobs. The security personnel resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob following which one agitator identified as Dani Harijan died in the scuffle.

Sources said that the protest turned violent when the security personnel of the plant hindered the protestors from entering into the premises after they barged into the gate and ransacked the plant properties.

On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and tried to control the situation.
