Sec 144 clamped in Odisha’s Soro after group clash over idol immersion

With palpable tension prevailing in Soro town, Odisha police and paramilitary forces today conducted a flag march in the sensitive areas of the town where Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed following group clash over Ganesh idol immersion.

According to reports, two groups clashed last night at around 9 pm when immersion procession was passing through Pathan Mahalla in Soro market in Balasore district. An altercation ensued between two groups followed by brick-batting, stone and bottle pelting in which at least five people were injured.

Some of the injured are undergoing treatment in the hospital.

With the intervention of police, the situation was brought under control last night. However, tension erupted today once again after which three platoons of Rapid Action Force (RAF) and other armed police forces were deployed in the sensitive areas in Soro town to prevent law and order situation.

In a related development, a youth was stabbed near Gandhi Square in Jeypore town in Koraput district during the immersion of Ganesha idol. The injured has been identified as Paban Pattnaik.

Initially, a profusely bleeding Paban was rushed to sub divisional hospital in Jeypore. Later, he was shifted to Koraput District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) as his condition deteriorated.
