Seven get jail term in dowry and rape case in Odisha

Bhadrak, Sept 6:

A special track court here awarded 10 years imprisonment to a rapist and three years jail term with Rs 5000 fine to other six convicts of a dowry and rape case in Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Tuesday.

Mita (name changed), a newly married woman of Rameswar village under Dhamnagar police limits in the district was allegedly raped by his brother-in-law Haria Gochayat after repeated torture by her in-laws.

Following the incident, police had arrested the seven persons on April 5, 2014.

Hearing the case, Bhadrak Special Track Court judge Lalita Manjari Patnaik sentenced Gochayat to 10 years of imprisonment under IPC section 376 and three years jail to six in-laws of the woman with a fine Rs 5000 under IPC section 498 (a) yesterday.

The in-laws have been identified as Nirodh, Raju, Abhimanyu, Makar, Damini, and Basant.

Government advocate Basant Kumar Swain was proceeding the case.
